My Family Immigration History

  • my grandma came from Germany and my grandfather was from Czechoslovakia
  • They met in college in Germany and went back to Czechoslovakia after they got married
  • On March 15, 1939, German troops invaded Czechoslovakia
  • made my grandparents move to Austria to avoid German dictatorship (and b/c it was the closest to C
  • Czechoslovakia)
  • March 12th, 1938 - Germany invaded Austria after the Austrian Nazi Party literally invited German troops to march in and take over the country
  • then in September 1939 - about 800,000 Austrians were drafted into the army (the German Wehrmacht), and another 150,000 served in the Waffen SS, an elite Nazi military unit, my grandfather was drafted to the German Wehrmacht and fought for Germany
  • in 1945 the war ended and he was disbanded from the army
  • After the war they went to go live in Austria
  • In 1959 facing financial problems they decided to go to America
  • the union came to be known as the Anschluss
  • after the war they came to America (New York)
